Ordinary Teens Doing Extraordinary Things – Sidney Smith

Sidney Smith TWHS

School: Thomas Worthington High School

Parish: St. Dominic Church

Parish Involvement:
I am an active member in St. Dominic Church’s youth group, Teen Spirit in which I am currently holding the officer position of treasurer. I participate in mass at St. Dominic church through being a lector and a Eucharistic minister. I also volunteer for and participate in events that our church holds such as the fish fry, Thanksgiving basket making, and the black history program.

Service Performed:
I have volunteered at our parish’s soup kitchen and have helped collect items for homeless shelters throughout Columbus. I am currently working on my Girl Scout Gold Award Project which entails implementing a garden at the OSU Star House (a drop-in shelter for homeless youth between the ages of 14 and 24). I have also volunteered at Columbus outdoor camps as a counselor in training for multiple weeks in the summer.

The Importance of Service:
Throughout my entire life, my family and I have participated in many service-related activities and my parents have taught me the importance of giving back to the community. I learned at a young age that you can’t take the things that have been given to you in life for granted because not everyone is fortunate enough to have the life that you have. Even though I have loving parents, a roof over my head, and three healthy meals a day, I know that not everyone is fortunate enough to have these necessities. Committing acts of service teaches us to see life through the eyes of others and it teaches us to be grateful for the things we have instead of wishing for the things we don’t have. Giving back to the community helps us be more caring and humble individuals. According to Google, the word community is defined as: “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common” and as “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals”. I believe this means that a community is meant to be a group of people who care for each other and work together to achieve a common goal. We have to help each other reach the goal, because that makes the success of the community so much greater when each citizen is a part of it. Everyone benefits from being part of a community in some way, so it is important that we give back to the community in return as a way of saying thank you. We all live in this great, big world together and it is important that we work together to achieve our goals.
